Swimmer Michael Phelps rues mistake in 100 metre freestyle final

Michael Phelps lamented his mistake at the turn of the US national championships 100 metre freestyle final, which saw him finish in seventh.
The 18-time Olympic gold medalist came out of retirement in April, but Wednesday's race in Irvine ended in disappointment for the 29-year-old.
Despite the pre-race build-up focusing on the battle between old rivals Phelps and Ryan Lochte, it was reigning Olympic champion Nathan Adrian who took the spoils in a time of 48.31 seconds.
Phelps was made to pay for a poor turn at halfway and was unable to recover sufficiently to challenge the leaders, clocking 49.17secs.
A top-four finish would have seen Phelps qualify for the US team to travel to the Pan Pacific Championships later this month, although he will have further chances to clinch his spot in other disciplines.
"When I literally took a couple kicks and I barely passed the flags, I knew there was very little chance that I was going to run anybody down," he said.
"It just kind of stinks that I missed the first wall.
"I'm just trying to get a spot on the team and go from there.
"I am ready to have a day off and get ready for the 100 metre fly."

LAGOS — The 31-year-old man, who allegedly strangled his 39-year-old international business woman lover to death in her apartment at Green Estate, Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos, last month, told a crowd yesterday that he did it out of jealousy.
The suspect, Kelechi Williams, who was paraded at the Lagos State Police Command, was arrested at the border between Ghana and Cote D’Ivore by operatives from the Area ‘E’ Command, Festac Town and those of International Police, INTERPOL, while fleeing with the deceased’s Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, with number plate LAGOS EKY 509 AZ.

The incident, according to him, occurred on July 19, 2014, at about 2 am during an altercation over the late arrival of his lover, a mother of four identified as Njideka Lizzy Nzewe.
How she was killed
Narrating how he snuffed life out of the deceased, the suspect, who hails from Umuji in Ndemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, said: “Lizzy was my girlfriend. I knew her three years ago. But we started getting serious in February this year.
“I came back from Ghana to visit her on July 16, 2014 which was on a Wednesday. The next day we went out and came back late.
“On Friday, she told me to stay back at home and rest because I was tired. She left the house, saying she was going to the new apartment she was to pack into, assuring me she would be back as usual by 6 p.m.
“But she did not return by 6pm. Rather, the gate man came with a power generating set, saying madam had gone to drop the workers.
“When it was 8 p.m. and I did not see her, I started calling her on phone but she did not pick. I called her up to 30 times without response.
“She came back by midnight and when I asked why she did not pick my calls, she said the phone was in silent mode. I brought out my phone and called her line only for it to ring.
“At that point I noticed she was drunk. I got angry and asked if that was the way she would pay me back for leaving everything in Ghana to come and spend time with her. I threatened to quit the relationship. But at that point, her phone rang and I told her to pick it but she insisted that I should pick it and when I did, the caller, who was a male, asked ‘baby are you home?’
“Immediately she discovered it was a male’s voice, she snatched the phone from me and asked why I should pick her calls. I reminded her of a similar incident when she came to visit me in Ghana and my phone rang. She pick it and on discovering it was a female, she smashed the phone on the ground, without knowing who the caller was.
“I reminded her also that she collected my other phones from me and brought them to Nigeria. In anger, I took the phone and smashed it on the ground.
“Before I knew it, she threw my things outside, saying I should leave her house. I told her to give me the N300,000 she borrowed from me to buy an air conditioner, if she wanted me to leave but she said she had no money with her and gave me her ATM card which she said had just N140,000.
“At a point, she slapped me and we started fighting. She held on to my manhood and started stretching it. That was when I held the wrapper that was around her neck and used it to strangle her, thereby forcing her to let go  my manhood. She fell down and became motionless.
“Immediately, I took her three phones, ATM card and went outside to meet the gate man to see me off to any ATM machine, where I withdrew N100,000.
“I dropped the gateman at home, and told him I was going to pump the tyre. At that point, I knew I was in trouble. I did not go back to her house for fear of being arrested.
“I drove straight to Mile Two, from where I picked a driver who drove me down to Ghana. I spent some days in Ghana before I decided to leave for Cote d’Ivoire, where unfortunately I was arrested.
“I never wanted to kill her. I have never fought in my life, let alone kill somebody. I did not also steal her jewellery and N8 million as claimed by the Police. The only money I withdrew was N100,000 and her phone.”
Suspect gives thanksgiving in church
Briefing newsmen earlier, the command’s boss, Umar Manko, said after the suspect killed the woman, he locked the door from outside, apparently to make it look as if they had gone out. He further disclosed that a new International Passport which bore the suspect’s name and the surname of his deceased’s lover, was found on him, suggesting that the motive was pre-empted.
Back in Ghana, preliminary investigation, according to the Police, revealed that the suspect took the SUV to church, declaring it was his. Police sources said he made an unspecified donation to the church and also threw a party to celebrate the new car.
How I discovered my madam’s corpse—Guard
On his part, the gate man, John Tungwim, said he suspected something was amiss when the suspect dashed out from the apartment that night.
According to him, “he told me he was going to the club with madam but that she asked him to go and withdraw money with her ATM card first.
“I went with him because I know madam’s pin code. But we came back, he told me to go inside that madam said she was tired and could not go. So, he drove out alone.
“I never suspected anything until the next day when I did not see madam. I called one of the children’s attention to it. Out of curiosity, I climbed a ladder only to discover that madam was on the floor foaming in her mouth. I contacted her brother who called in the police.”

Oyinlola is a serial betrayer

Oyinlola is a serial betrayer —

Reacting to Oyinlola’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Omisore said in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Diran Odeyemi that “the former Governor is a confirmed serial betrayer, a politician who had lost whatever little followers he had due to his inconsistency, political somersaults and unreliability in political alliances.”
Aregbesola: Incumbent, Oyinlola: Immediate past governor and Omisore: Gearing up
Aregbesola, Oyinlola and Omisore: Gearing up
Omisore who stressed that Oyinlola’s exit could not stop the victory of the PDP on Saturday noted that Oyinlola’s followers were still with him in the PDP.
He alleged that Oyinlola implemented an agenda that culminated in the nullification of the 2011 governorship in a bid to stop Omisore as well as betrayed Chief Ebenezer Babatope, who had been endorsed to become the PDP national secretary.
Omisore said that “the politics leading to his exit as a National Secretary was also traceable to his double dealings. While he was pushing for court action to return to office, he was holding nocturnal meetings with the APC. While he was negotiating with the President, Oyinlola had directed his few supporters to defect to the APC. He is never a consistent political player.”
He said: “We want to put it on record that his defection has no impact on the electoral fortunes of the PDP in the Saturday election. If any, the exit has cleaned the PDP of the last dark spot which constitutes a moral burden on our shoulder. By defecting, PDP has become fully sanitized and poised for a new lease of life in the government to be formed after the August 9 victory.”

Man beheaded for tortring his toddler to death

Man beheaded for torturing his toddler to death

on
– A Saudi man was beheaded Tuesday for torturing and beating his two-year-old boy to death, the interior ministry said.
Maqbul bin Madi al-Sharari hit his son Mohammed “repeatedly with a cane on the back of his head and the rest of his body,” the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.
He also punched the toddler in the face repeatedly and “burned him in different parts of his body, torturing him several times, which led to his death,” the ministry said.
Sharari’s execution in the northern Jawf region, brings to 18 the number of death sentences carried out this year in the ultra-conservative kingdom.
Saudi Arabia beheaded 78 people in 2013, according to an AFP count.
Last year, the UN High Commission for Human Rights denounced a “sharp increase in the use of capital punishment” there since 2011.
According to rights group Amnesty International, the number of executions rose from 27 in 2010, including five foreigners, to 82 in 2011, including 28 foreigners.
In 2012, the number of executions dipped slightly to 79, among them 27 foreigners.
Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of Islamic sharia law.

38 year old British photographer David Christie said he captured the stunning moment a gigantic 'hand' appeared through the clouds above his home...and he thinks the fist-like wind funnel is the 'Hand of God'.
"I love weather photography and I've taken a few pictures of small wind funnels in the past. But this was something else. It looked as through there was a huge hand piercing through the clouds - it was phenomenal. It really did seem like the hand of God. My wife and I are both photographers and we've never seen anything like this. This was a very surreal experience

What Men Think; Should Prostitution Should BE Legalised in Nigeria.

What Men Think: Should Prostitution Be Legalized In Nigeria?

Nigerian prostitutes have recently come out to protest the legalization of their job in the country, even matching on the streets and carrying boards saying SEX WORKERS HAVE RIGHTS but are they pushing it too far? Here is what Men think about this fight.
Singer Maheeda called on prostitution to be legalized
What Men Think: Should Nigeria legalize prostitution? What Men Think: Should Nigeria legalize prostitution?
Sadly, prostitution is NOT Legalized in Nigeria but there are some popular sex workers - like Patoo Abraham - who believe its something the Federal Government should look into. According to her and those she's trying to help, "Sex Workers Have Rights" and should be respected by the law as well as human beigns. Well, the thing is not every one agrees but because MEN are the ones using these prostitutes often times, we are asking OUR MEN if Sex Workers should be given the right to practice what they do in Nigeria. Here's what they think:
"I don't even have a problem with them being there or here. I don't do whores so this fight is just useless to my candid opinion". Besided, some of these girls can kill because they have no feelings at all. they are like devils - Kayode, Lagos
"Why should women stoop so low as do prostitution and then fight to have rights! What rights in the first place? They are a bunch of confused female who have adapted to laziness and are finding the easiest way to make money. So NO Legalization!" - James, UK
"Men should shut up when they can't find anything reasonable to say. Prostitution is a job nowadays and those who do it actually work hard to earn their money but sometimes they are being raped, used for rituals or disowned by family. So because they are sex workers, Government should not protect them from evil?" - Anthony Abuja
"No, No,No! Prostitution should never be legalized in Nigeria. This is because its a shameful and demonic business. No parent or sibling will clap hands for a daughter who is into this so i see no reason why they should be given any rights. It's shameful!" - Kola, Abuja
"Who thinks to have sex multiple times in a day or a week is not hard work? That's crazy and i applaud those who do it just to make ends meet. For me, the Government should take a look into this and see what they can do to make it feel less shameful." - Bayo, Ogun State
"Jesus forgave the prostitute in the bible and then asked her to discontinue the practice. So, prostitution should not be legalized in my country. Jesus didn't encourage it either!" - Pius - Abia State
"While growing up, I was dis-virgined by a prostitute and I thank her everyday for that (in my mind). They are useful too to most young boys now but only thing is, condoms should always be used. I know what i know today because of that girl." - Andrew - Port Harcourt.
"I don't care whatsoever, Prostitutes should be caught, charged and jailed. They are a disgrace to the society and to humaity. Sex is a sacred between a man and wife. Good enough, we sin by committing fornication but sex can't be for sale too!" - Ortis, Ibadan
"I think the people who are pushing these useless girls are these useless rich men who are greedy and just want women to satisfy them by doing the oddest things. These same men kill these girls for money rituals and believe they were even useless anyways. I think the Government should not legalize prostitution." - Abbas, Delta State

Lagos Government Warns Prophet TB Joshua Not To Accept Ebola Victims At His Synagogue Church -The Nation Newspaper

Officials of Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Government visited the General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet Temitope Joshua seeking his cooperation in ensuring Ebola victims are not brought to his church for healing.

Prophet T B Joshua As the deadly Ebola epidemic continues to wreck havoc on West African countries, the Lagos state government on Sunday stepped up its surveillance to ensure infected nationals of affected countries sneak into Nigeria.
Officials of Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Government  visited the General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet Temitope Joshua seeking his cooperation in ensuring Ebola victims are not brought to his church for healing.
The SCOAN, a popular international church reputed for its claims of divine healing is a popular destination for sick people all over the world including the West African countries currently battling the Ebola epidemic.
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who led the delegation to the SCOAN, said the visit was in recognition that the church is an international Christian congregation whose members comprise of people from all over the world including the countries of West African sub-region already affected by the disease.
The commissioner added that the visit is one of the state government’s strategies of sensitizing faith-based organizations on the need to cooperate with the government to prevent the spread of the disease in the country by educating the worshippers to report health issues to medical experts.
Idris said the Federal and Lagos state government are working hard to prevent a spread of the virus into the country, the delegation has deemed it fit to educate and create awareness among the multinational congregation on the disease and how it can spread.
“We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again, we need to know the resources you have here because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. We are here to work together on how to contain this disease,” Idris told the cleric.
Another member of the delegation and Director, Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi said the visit was to inform the Synagogue church leadership about the deadliness of the Ebola virus and to ensure that it does not escape into the country.
Nasidi, who is both an Epidemiologist and Virologist, said the meeting is a “positive engagement mission” saying the team is seeking the cooperation of the church in containing the virus.
“We are here to engage you positively, we know the powers of this House and your powers and we are duty- bound to protect you and your congregation. We have no doubt the power God has given you, we can’t do that, but we want to help and make it work stronger,” he said.

Aregbesola winning chance

FRIDAY, May 24, 2013, 35 governors gathered to vote for the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF. With the initial postponement and intrigues that surrounded it, it was going to be a night of long knives.
With the Presidency interested in the outcome and with Governor Rotimi Amaechi determined to give it another shot in spite of his open confrontation with the President, it was going to take more than ordinary determination to navigate the treacherous waters It would take grit, uncommon courage and the ability to outfox the henchmen of the Presidency. At the entrance of the venue of the election, all the Governors were mandated to submit all their mobile phones. But one man particularly suspected there was going to be foul play so he sneaked in a pen camera. He recorded the vote counting surreptitiously until when Governor Godswill Akpabio noticed they were being secretly recorded. When controversy sprang up on the actual winner of the contest, he released the video to the public. The man who exposed the lie was Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Governor of Osun State. Controversy is his middle name. For nine months, he operated solely without commissioners. He renamed Osun State and gave it a new nomenclature called ‘State of Osun.’ He fashioned a new educational policy and called it re-classification of schools. In one fell swoop, schools were merged and bedlam ensued In spite of the unending controversies and despite the appointment of an Osun State indigene Jelili Adesiyan as the Minister of Police Affairs, it is my carefully considered opinion that Ogbeni Aregbesola will win the August 9 election. Here’s why I think he will trump Otunba Iyiola Omisore, the PDP’s candidate.
Omisore’s poor candidature. Iyiola Omisore is not Peter Ayodele Fayose. He lacks the charisma of Fayose. He is not a Jimi Agbaje. He lacks the character of Agbaje. He doesn’t have the mass appeal even though he has the notoriety.Aregbesola’s winning chance on August 04, 2014 / in Viewpoint 1:49 pm / Comments FRIDAY, May 24, 2013, 35 governors gathered to vote for the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF. He is not a Jimi Agbaje. He lacks the character of Agbaje. He doesn’t have the mass appeal even though he has the notoriety. While you cannot deny that he has a semblance of structure having been the Deputy Governor of the State and also a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, his major Achilles heel is that he has been successfully tainted by the accusation of involvement in Bola Ige’s murder. This is one accusation that has refused to go in spite of his protestations. In addition, his campaign is a poor caricature of Fayose’s. Whoever is his campaign director needs to get fired as he has run one of the most bizarre and lacklustre campaigns ever. His efforts to align with the masses fell flat- his handling of two roasted corn cobs in both hands, his ride to a campaign venue on an okada and his absurd combination of two different Ankara materials as clothes are images that have defined his campaign. He has not successfully exploited Rauf Aregbesola’s obvious weaknesses. When it was time to debate Ogbeni, he didn’t show up. That was an opportunity to redeem himself but he failed to utilize it. Fayose challenged Kayode Fayemi for a walk on the streets of Ado-Ekiti but Omisore claimed he didn’t come for the debate because he didn’t want Ogbeni to beat him up. Is it any wonder that the President has not attended any rally in Osun State even up till now? The President must have read the handwriting on the wall and there was no point dissipating energy in the wrong direction. PDP lost it when the ticket was given to Omisore because he is irredeemable. If he’s banking on Federal might, he got it wrong this time because you can only rig successfully where you are popular. In fact, Ogbeni will be gifted this election not because of his superlative performance but primarily because of Omisore’s poor candidature. Disunity in the PDP House. No situation exacerbated the looming disunity in Osun State PDP than the statement credited to the Minister for Police Affairs that he will beat Senator Isiaka Adeleke when he leaves office. Adeleke claimed he was assaulted during a party meeting and he subsequently defected to APC. Fatai Akinbade, a former Chairman of the State PDP and a man who served three different times as Commissioner under three different military regimes also defected to the Labour Party. Former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has not come out openly in support of Omisore despite belonging to the same party. In fact, he was even courted by the top echelon of the APC. As a former National Secretary of the party and also a former Governor of the State, his body language speaks volumes. Oyinlola is a Prince of Okuku, the capital of Odo-Otin Local Government, one of the 30 local government areas in Osun State. It is instructive to note that Odo-Otin is one of the three local government council areas with the highest number of 15 wards in the state after Osogbo and Iwo. Ogbeni Aregbesola’s above-average performance. In spite of his controversies, only a blind man will ignore Ogbeni’s performance. He has built mega schools, many of them super infrastructures with commendable appurtenances. He has constructed over 20 inter-city roads and more than 15 intra-city roads. This is apart from some very ambitious dualisation projects embarked upon. The free festive inter-city train ride from Lagos to Osogbo has become a constant feature of his administration. I was informed that he has built 74 primary health centres all over Osun State. He has increased IGR in Osun from N300 million to N1.6 billion and has not been known to borrow from any financial institution, save for the Islamic bond he took. His O’Meals project is laudable. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying the fact that he has improved the face of governance in the state. Ogbeni’s massive campaign network. Ogbeni has embarked on a blitzkrieg of a campaign. Maybe due to the lessons learnt from Ekiti’s recent election, he has left no stone untouched. This is the first time I’m seeing an incumbent campaign as if he’s the under-dog. He has run a very good campaign so far- both terrestrially and on social media. Going by his student unionism antecedents, one is not too surprised that he has at least two former student leaders in his cabinet and they are both active in running his campaign. Most of the controversial issues raised have been either effectively addressed or well mitigated by this team. When the issue of religious fundamentalism came up, they released the video of Bishop David Oyedepo’s visit. Ogbeni has been photographed genuflecting to Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye. He attended a major night vigil organised by a white garment church. He has been dancing ‘skelewu’ at all rallies to show he can connect with the populace. He has run his campaign without Bola Tinubu being visible; so the issue of the overbearing influence of the APC leader has been largely well managed. Ogbeni runs the best propaganda machinery in the South West and the effect can be seen in how he has successfully div While you cannot deny that he has a semblance of structure having been the Deputy Governor of the State and also a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, his major Achilles heel is that he has been successfully tainted by the accusation of involvement in Bola Ige’s murder This is one accusation that has refused to go in spite of his protestations.
Ogbeni runs the best propaganda machinery in the South West and the effect can be seen in how he has successfully diverted attention from his controversies while making Omisore seem to be the controversial one.
I therefore have no doubt that he is going to win the governorship election of August 9 in a landslide.

Aregbesola’s winning chance

on   /   in Viewpoint 1:49 pm   /   Comments
FRIDAY, May 24, 2013, 35 governors gathered to vote for the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF. With the initial postponement and intrigues that surrounded it, it was going to be a night of long knives.
With the Presidency interested in the outcome and with Governor Rotimi Amaechi determined to give it another shot in spite of his open confrontation with the President, it was going to take more than ordinary determination to navigate the treacherous waters.
It would take grit, uncommon courage and the ability to outfox the henchmen of the Presidency.
In one fell swoop, schools were merged and bedlam ensued.
In spite of the unending controversies and despite the appointment of an Osun State indigene Jelili Adesiyan as the Minister of Police Affairs, it is my carefully considered opinion that Ogbeni Aregbesola will win the August 9 election.

Doctor who Treated More Than 100 Ebola Patients in Sierra Leone Dies From the Virus.

Dr. Sheik Umar Khan and health officials dressed protectively against the virus Sheik Umar Khan, the Sierra Leonean doctor hailed as a “national hero” for treating more than one hundred Ebola patients, died today of the same disease.
According to Sierra Leone’s Chief Medical Officer Brima Kargbo, Sierra Leone has lost its only viral haemorrhagic specialist in the face of this epidemic. The doctor was diagnosed with the virus last week.
In a Reuters interview, the late 39-year old Khan had expressed fears for his life before being diagnosed. This was despite his wearing protective gear when treating patients. His fears corroborate a statement made in a CNN interview by Dr. Peter Piot, the first scientist to discover the virus in the 1970s. The doctor says, “this is an epidemic of dysfunctional health systems.” He then goes on to explain how basic sanitary measures can control the spread of the disease.
According to Dr. Piot, Ebola is not particularly easy to catch. In his interview, he says, one needs “really close contact” in order to get infected. “Just being on a bus with someone with Ebola, that’s not a problem,” he says. The WHO states that the virus spreads from direct contact, "(through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and indirect contact with environments contaminated with such fluids."
The virus first appeared in Guinea in March and has since spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. The WHO reports that as of July 23rd, there has been a total of 1,201 cases and 672 deaths between the three West African countries.
Other West African countries are now taking steps to prevent the spread of the disease to their countries. In light of recent events where a Liberian man boarded a flight to Nigeria and died of the Ebola virus in a Lagos hospital, two airlines, Arik Air and Asky, have suspended flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone. Nigerian authorities have also stepped up screening at its airports, and claim to be tracking those who came into contact with the Liberian passenger.
The fatality rate is currently 60% though the disease can kill up to 90% of those infected.

The Police in Kano on Monday confirmed the death of two female bombers in separate bomb blasts in Kano.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kano Police Command, ASP Magaji Majiya, made the confirmation at a news briefing.
He said the first incident happened around 10.30 a.m. at an NNPC Mega Filling Station in Hotoro on Maiduguri Road in Nasarawa local government area.
According to him, the female bomber disguised herself as a kerosene buyer and joined other buyers who were on the queue.
He added that after joining the queue, she detonated the explosive, killing herself and three others.
Majiya said that seven other persons who sustained injuries were now receiving medical attention at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).
He said the command had commenced investigation to unravel the motive behind the attack, adding that security had been beefed up in the ancient city.
